State Employees’ Credit Union Recognized By NC State Board of Education and NC Department of Public Instruction for Financial Literacy Effort

Raleigh, NC (allCUnews) – State Employees’ Credit Union (SECU) was recognized by the North Carolina State Board of Education and the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (DPI) for collaborating with DPI to improve personal financial literacy education in North Carolina’s public schools. SECU, a long-time promoter of the National Endowment for Financial Education (NEFE) High School Financial Planning Program® (HSFPP), partnered with the Department of Public Instruction in 2007-08 to provide NEFE training to the State’s high school civics and economics teachers. With the State Board of Education having approved the NEFE curriculum, teachers can now incorporate the material into their courses to meet the NC House Bill 1473 mandate for personal financial literacy in the classroom.

Leigh Brady, Senior Vice President of SECU’s Education Services department states, “Financial literacy has been and continues to be a main focus for State Employees’ Credit Union. When NCDPI came to the credit union to discuss the project in 2007, we were more than willing to help with training and implementation of the program. SECU personnel have been using NEFE materials to teach students in the local communities for a number of years and we are excited this great resource can reach all North Carolina students during their high school career. Too many young people are entering college and the workforce without the basic knowledge of personal finance and they find themselves with devastating debt in record time. The new legislation is crucial in breaking this cycle and we are proud to assist with this effort.”

Tracey Greggs, NC DPI Social Studies Section Chief adds, “Financial literacy is a huge concern locally and nationally and it is imperative for our students to learn the tools needed to make good financial decisions. To effectively teach personal financial literacy, we have to make sure our instructors have the proper materials and support. State Employees’ Credit Union has been crucial in providing this and we want to recognize and thank SECU for their continuous support, training, and contributions to personal financial literacy.”
